Why did you go into Music Therapy?

I pursued music therapy because I saw a unique opportunity to connect with people and to reach them in a very special way. Much of my junior high and high school years were centered around music and sharing that with other people, and I saw a chance to continue that in a meaningful way with music therapy. The way music connects people and impacts them is what motivated me to choose music therapy.

Favorite music-related quote?

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything."- Plato

What is your favorite part of being a music therapist?

I love to see clients able to access their full potential in such a rewarding way. A client may not even realize how hard they are working because they are so rewarded by the musical element of their work. Watching music therapy help to transform and break through struggles always inspires me and motivates me to continue to be the best version of myself.

Advice for a high school student interested in this career?

Music therapy will teach you so much about what it means to be a part of a community of people and what it looks like to support each other as individuals. It is a long road, but it is one that constantly shapes and changes you into a better person. There is no greater gift than being able to know that you have helped another person in any way – big or small – and to be able to have a helping profession is an amazing way to go through this life.
